Herr Doktor Knightsbridge, I presume?

The backbone of this country... Was a chain of microwave towers that ran north from the government citadels in London to Spadeadam cosmodrome and west to the data stores outside Pembroke docks. Each tower resembled a space cruiser carefully parked by Dan Dare, and every one was maintained by teams of chaps who trundled hither and yon across the countryside in grey vans, featureless save small HMSC sigils on the doors.

You'd often find them in the quiet country pubs that seemed to be conveniently located near each tower, thoughtfully pulling on a briar while mulling over some complex data transmission problem, a pint of good bitter within easy reach. Or perhaps enjoying a game of darts with the local farm labourers.
